Overview: VII The L.D. Museum Lecture Series on Art, Culture & Heritage by Dr. Harsha V. Dehejia
March 18, 2017

On March 18th, 2017, VII The L.D. Museum Lecture Series on Art, Culture & Heritage was observed with a talk delivered by Dr. Harsha V. Dehejia (Eminent Art Philosopher & Adjunct Professor, College of the Humanities of Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario - Canada). He delivered a lecture on "Krishna Shringara". He emphasized that to fully understand Krishna Shringara one must, in Jayadeva's words, not only have a romantic sensitivity but equally have steadfast devotion to Krishna. His thoroughly illustrated talk explored the historic evolution of Krishna Shringara. He discoursed evidently the Bhagavata Purana, which manifests shringara rasa of Krishna with the twin concepts of madhurya and viraha in celebrating Krishna Shringara. His philosophical approach in understanding the metaphor especially from the dasham skanda of Bhagavat Purana was thought provoking. He reflected that 'it is Krishna, who though his amorous involvement with the gopis in Vrindavana, reminds us that the true realization can only come when the sensuality of romantic love is transferred into the spirituality of love and when sakar prem is changed to nirakar prem. Over all, his philosophically insightful lecture was well accepted by the audience with cultural connection to art and our heritage. Among the audience there were many delegates, scholars and renown personality of Ahmedabad.
