The central aim of this talk is to illuminate the genesis of Chamba painting, with particular emphasis on its lineage within the broader painting tradition of Mandi. Through a meticulous examination of a noteworthy artwork drawn from the distinguished N C Mehta collection (at the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum), this endeavour seeks to unravel the intricate political and diplomatic narratives that intertwine these two ostensibly distinct artistic traditions. By doing so, it endeavours to provide valuable insights, not only into the cultural and historical factors that exerted considerable influence upon the 17th-century political landscape but also into the antecedents of Chamba painting itself.
