This talk delves into the fascinating yet limited world of Parallel Cinema in Gujarat. The late 1960s marks the beginning of what later came to be called ‘Parallel Cinema’ or the ‘New Wave’. The impact of which was also felt in Gujarati Cinema in the 1970s - 1980s. It was a time when filmmakers tried to establish a ‘new tradition’ of filmmaking, away from the conventional understanding of ‘commercial’ films. To offer a broader perspective, the talk will highlight examples from other regional cinemas in India, showing how the New Wave Movement influenced and found resonance in diverse cultural contexts.
