About Nehal Desai

Nehal Desai draws inspiration from real and metaphysical landscapes, where earth, water, mountains, skies, and the cosmos converge. Nature lies at the core of her practice, expressed through expansive skies, flowing waters, and grounded earth forms, often inhabited by hybrid human–animal figures. Rooted in the wisdom of earlier generations and cultural traditions shaped by an intimate relationship with the natural world, her work invites viewers into immersive, layered spaces—experiences that are meant to be felt as much as seen.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda (1999), followed by a Master’s degree in Textile Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Her early professional journey unfolded within the field of textiles, where she worked closely with arts and crafts communities at the grassroots level, developing a deep sensitivity to material processes, labour, and cultural histories. Between 2003 and 2017, she founded and led her eponymous label, Nehal Desai, designing and producing handwoven and printed textiles and garments. Her collections were exhibited and retailed across India and France for over a decade.

Over time, Desai consciously stepped away from the velocity of entrepreneurial practice, returning to painting and embracing a slower, more contemplative visual language—one that is grounded in reflection, material intimacy, and sustained engagement with time. Her works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Ahmedabad (2025), Chandigarh (2025), and New Delhi (2024). Her works are part of prominent institutional and corporate collections, including NMACC, GMDC, and Adani Industries, as well as private collections in India and abroad. She lives and works in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
